How to know when fruit is ripe?
The fruit should come off the tree with a light twist when ripe. If you don’t have the time to pick all the ripe fruit at once- why not invite your friends or neighbours around and offer them to take home whatever they want? Or invite Abundance round to help you pick?
Pears will ripen off the tree- pick them early if you want!
Pears can be picked before they are ripe and WILL ripen off the tree. So once they are a good size, pick them at your leisure. You can put them in a bowl with bananas to help them ripen faster. This will save you being surrounded by falling pears as they tend to ripen all in one go and then often are too much to handle!
To prevent your lawn being strewn with falling, squashy ripe pears in one go, why not consider setting up netting, or even just a bed sheet to catch fruit – perhaps tied to fence posts? That way the fruit is less likely to be damaged when falling and so you can eat or cook with more of it! This is especially a good idea when the ground underneath your tree is paving slabs or other hard surfaces.
