Hello Everyone! Fruit-puns are unavoidable when Oxford is slowly revealing it’s food bounty and there’s so much ripening and growing around us, it’s hard not to get excited! This year there will be many more home-owners and private-land owners who feel overwhelmed by their fruit crop & run out of uses for it, and we want to raise our profile as much as possible so we can offer our help in harvesting and redistribution of the unwanted fruit to those in need (and also to anyone we pass in the street with a trailer-full of fruit!)
We hope the Oxford Mail article about Abundance Oxford will help connect us with many more of these home-owners and land-owners (if you are one of them, hello! thanks for looking us up and please look at the “Tree Owner?…” page for more information…) as well as more groups that want to run skill-shares with us, and also receive fruit donations! Please email abundanceharvestsoxford@gmail.com to tell us more about how we can collaborate with you or help out with your project!
*** THE ARTICLE ***
Here’s the article if you missed it: www.oxfordmail.co.uk/news/10561441.Trailer_will_boost_fruit_donations/
We’d like to clarify a few things!
* We do NOT “just drive round in cars” (!), most of the time we transfer fruit by bike, with full paniers, rucksacks and bags in small groups of 3-5, cars were only ever used as a last resort during harvest season last year when we couldn’t safely transfer the load we had. (most of our volunteers only own bikes, not cars, and would hate the idea of driving fruit around if we could bike it around!) This harvest season, with our very own bike trailer (fyi not the bike trailer in the picture which is one we’re borrowing whilst get our trailer road-ready) we’ll be able to shun fossil-fuel powered fruit transportation completely! HURRAY!
* We have renamed the “chair” position, “Facilitator“.
* The great community family centre working with kids is based in East Oxford and is called “Donnington Doorstep“.
Hurray for the mention about sustainable harvesting, which we really wanted to make sure went in! And we hope readers will get in touch with us from this article and want to find out more… Please let us know if you have a copy of the newspaper that we feature in, we’d love to cut out the article and keep it!
Thanks to Jak and Kat for being great models!
